Art of Defence

Introduction

I’ve always had a particular affinity for tower defence games. Starting with my first tower defence game played on a custom map for Starcraft, I enjoyed the genre’s incredible simplicity despite the depth of strategy involved. This was further reinforced by the release of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, in which my favourite mission was the bonus unlockable tower defence map.

Because of my love for the tower defence genre, it is only fitting that one day I create my own contribution to the genre. And with this, Art of Defence was born.

About

Art of Defence is a Tower Defence game. The idea is simple: enemies spawn at the start of the path, and it is your job to construct towers along that path in order to destroy the enemies before they reach the end. If an enemy reaches the end, you lose a life. Once all your lives are depleted, you lose the game. There is a choice of 6 basic towers, and a few upgrades. Towers can be sold, and extra lives can be bought. There are 25 levels in total, including a final boss.

Art of Defence is a Win32 application written in C++ and utilising Direct3D 9.0. The main codebase for Art of Defence is relatively old, and is based on a 3D engine I wrote in 2006 during Year 10.

Art of Defence was submitted into the Monash IT Challenge 2008, where it won first-place in the Games Development category.
